Turbo EA competes with established Enterprise Architecture Management products including SAP LeanIX, Ardoq, Bizzdesign, Avolution Abacus and MEGA HOPEX. How this comparison is made

Vendor comparison pages are usually written by the vendor who wins, so this one states its rules up front. Claims about Turbo EA are made freely, because you can verify every one of them against the published source code, the documentation and a running instance. Claims about the other products are deliberately limited to what is true of commercial software by definition, such as being proprietary and being priced per engagement.

That rule has one visible consequence. Only the Turbo EA column carries a positive value, and the other column mostly tells you what to ask each vendor rather than answering for them. Turbo EA is a self-hosted alternative to commercial Enterprise Architecture Management platforms. The core is free under the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1-MIT), it runs as Docker containers on infrastructure you control, and it has no per-seat licensing, so an unlimited number of architects and stakeholders can use it at no cost. It bundles three capabilities that commercial EA suites commonly sell as separate modules or separate products: native BPMN 2.0 process modelling, project and portfolio management, and a TOGAF Statement of Architecture Work editor with sign-off workflows. A commercial platform remains the better choice when you need contractual support with a service level agreement, a supplier to answer your procurement and security questionnaires, an implementation partner ecosystem, or analyst coverage to support an internal decision.

What is actually comparable

When a commercial EA tool is the better choice

Turbo EA is not the right answer for every organisation. These are the situations in which one of the commercial platforms will serve you better, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

You need contractual support

If an outage or a defect has to be answered inside a contractual window, you need a supplier with a support organisation and a service level agreement behind it. Turbo EA offers community support on GitHub and paid consulting from the author, and neither of those is a support contract.

Procurement requires an established supplier

Many enterprises require a supplier to complete security questionnaires, hold recognised certifications, carry insurance and pass a vendor risk assessment. Established vendors have teams for exactly this. Turbo EA is software you run yourself, so the certifications that apply are the ones covering your own hosting environment.

Turbo EA needs a Docker host, a PostgreSQL database, backups, TLS termination and someone to apply upgrades. If your organisation has no platform team willing to own that, a hosted service removes real work that somebody would otherwise have to do.

SAP LeanIX

A widely adopted commercial EA management platform, now part of SAP. It is the tool Turbo EA is most often compared with, and it is the only one for which Turbo EA ships a dedicated importer today, with field mapping and a staged review before anything is written. A commercial platform with deep ArchiMate modelling heritage. A Bizzdesign importer is on the Turbo EA roadmap. If formal ArchiMate conformance is a hard requirement for your practice, evaluate that requirement directly against each candidate rather than taking either side of this comparison on trust.

A commercial EA platform known for quantitative analysis and modelling breadth. Turbo EA does not offer a dedicated Abacus importer, so a migration would go through Excel or CSV export and the Turbo EA bulk importer.

Moving from a commercial tool to Turbo EA

Turbo EA ships a dedicated LeanIX importer with field mapping and a staged review, so you can see exactly what will be created before anything is committed. Importers for Ardoq, MEGA and Bizzdesign are on the roadmap and are not available yet. Any product that exports to Excel or CSV can be loaded today through the bulk importer, which supports field mapping and a preview, so a migration can be rehearsed as many times as it takes. Migration and metamodel design are also available as a paid engagement if you would rather not run it yourself.

Is Turbo EA an alternative to LeanIX?

Yes. Turbo EA covers the same core ground as a commercial EA management platform, namely an application and technology inventory, a configurable metamodel, capability mapping, lifecycle and cost reporting, and dependency analysis. It differs in being self-hosted and free to licence, with no per-seat cost, and it ships a dedicated LeanIX importer with field mapping and a staged review. Whether it is the right alternative for you depends mostly on whether you can host it and whether you need a contractual support relationship.

Is there an open source enterprise architecture tool?

Turbo EA is one.
